Negative taken group portrait of the Confirmation Class at Saint John the Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas on December 1, 1940. Bishop John B. Morris asked the Holy Spirit Fathers to open a Catholic parish for African Americans in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas in 1910. Although the Fathers agreed, a priest was not sent to Fort Smith until 1917 at which point St. John the Baptist Church parish was established. Bishop Morris and Mother Katherine Drexel contributed money for a church and school, which was dedicated in 1920. The St. John the Baptist parish in Fort Smith closed about 1969.
